As Rotaract turns 50 in 2018 (started in 1968,), Rotaract Club of Blantyre of District 9210 is embarking on a Water and Sanitation project to celebrate the milestone. The Club has noted that access to good sanitary materials for girls in communities is not easy. Pupil absenteeism is high especially among girls who are menstruating. Dropout rates are higher for older girls, exacerbated by lack of girl friendly sanitation facilities in schools. Blantyre has 6 school zones and Nkolokoti primary school was noted to be in need. The school has approximately 8000 students, with an enrolment of about 2000 students each year. As of June 2016, the school had 4763 girls. The club has therefore embarked on a project to purchase from Green Malata and donate reusable sanitary pads to the older girls of Nkolokoti primary school. Each girl would be given a package, which would contain 4 pads and underwear. With proper care the pads can be used for over a year. Materials to make the sanitary pads are easily accessible and more affordable than buying disposable pads in stores. The project will cost approximately USD10,500 and is scheduled to be completed by November 2018. Please help us keep a girl child in school.
